Overview Purpose: Creating and printing bilingual picture books to engage Cambodian children in literacy learning.These books written in English and Khmer, will be used in four privately run schools in Cambodia; three in Phnom Penh and one school in rural Kratie province. The purpose of these books is to get students interested in reading using stories and accompanying images that are relevant to their lives. Currently, these children only have access to western themed donated books. Goals
The books are targeted to children in grades 1-6 with vocabulary and images that are relevant in their lives. Printing of these books will be done in Cambodia in order to contribute to the local economy and eliminate the need to deliver or ship the books. The books will be written and illustrated a by Levi and Elaine Crebo (Canada), Erika Makino (Hong Kong). Each book will consist of two thematic stories, be 40 pages in length and will cost $8.00 US to print. There will be a number of themes in a series including; Transportation, Animals, Clothing, Jobs and Food.
