November 17-2016
The Sewing School began its operation in December 2016; a project to support local women by teaching them a marketable skill and prevent them from migrating to other areas for work. It is the intention to generate an income from producing uniforms and other items in order to support the Kratie Light of Future School in a sustainable manner. Initially, there will be 10 women trained from Kratie province. Thank you to Ogopogo Rotary Club of Kelowna, BC Canada 🇨🇦 for the funding to support and run this sewing project. Thank you for the support and collaboration! www.cambodiancare.org LIGHT OF FUTURE SCHOOL Khoi Village Snoul District, Kratie Province Cambodia Number of children to benefit: 250 students (children + teens) Approximate number of indirect beneficiaries: Three villages comprising approximately 280 families. 1. Overview of location Kratie or Kraches is a province of Cambodia located in the northeast. It borders Stung Treng Province to the north, Mondulkiri to the east, Kompong Thom and Kompong Cham to the west, and Tbong Khmum Province and Vietnam to the South. Koi Village is a five hour drive from the capital city of Phnom Penh.
People face malaria which is spread during the rainy season while other diseases such as dengue, are common. There are little water resources apart from rainwater. There are only a few small streams from which these people are able to get water from for their daily consumption. Many children suffer from a lack of formal quality education because Koi village has no government school. Most children are not able to attend school regularly because of the long distance to travel to the closest school, and often teachers do not show up to class on a regular basis. 2. Needs Analysis Three community development tools were used to conduct a needs analysis: 1. Community Resources Mapping: This tool is used to obtain an overview of the resources available to the community in the form social, economic, demographic and geographical details. The expected output of this exercise is to see and evaluate. Various aspects for development can be discussed referencing the map ,such as the potential location for drinking water, tube wells, school buildings, latrines and their income generation. 2. Seasonal calendar analysis: This tool is used to analyze seasonal activities in the village as a set pattern. The expected output of this exercise is to see and evaluate and identify crisis periods in the community when outside intervention is required. It can become the basis for discussion regarding the introduction of new programmes or the modification of current programmes. 3. Ten Seeds Technique: This tool is used to see and test the percentage of situations of lives of the people, and crisis in the village. It helped the villagers who have no educational background by providing them with a simple of explanation of how to vote for their needs/crisis in their lives. PIE CHART 1 Children who have never attended school 2 Children who have quit school 3 Children who have attended school, but not regularly 4 Children who have been forced to work 5 Children who have migrated to other areas 3. Community Contribution The people in this village are earnestly asking Cambodian Care to come in and help them with a school, because their children have suffered from basic quality education. They’ve made repeated request the government of Cambodia to open a school in their village, but their requests have fallen on the deaf ears. They villagers have a collection of timber and are providing piece of land (51 meters width, 110 meters) on which to build a school. |
